THE CHINESE CENTURY
“When China will wake up, the world will tremble”
Napoleon 1816 and Lenin 1923
Although all the indicators, above all economic indicators, point towards the XXI century as the “Chinese century”, China is still largely a mystery for most of us. Through a collection of stories of every day life, the portraits of powerful men and common persons, and his travels to the capitals of tomorrow such as Shanghai, Hangzhou and Hong Kong, Federico Rampini will open the doors for us to better understand this new emerging superpower.
Federico Rampini is the Asia Chief Correspondent, and senior columnist on global issues, of the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica. He has taught at the University of California Berkeley and he is now Visiting Professor at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. In 2005 he received the Luigi Barzini Prize as the best Italian journalist of the year. His most recent book, “The Chinese Century,” has just been published in Italy and is an acclaimed bestseller.

2005 Events
December 4, 2005: “BLACK NATIVITY”
Sunday, December 4, 2005, 4:00 p.m.
benefit performance followed by dessert reception
Lorraine Hansberry Theater
620 Sutter Street, San Francisco
Celebrate an evening of spirited jubilation as IIE launches the holiday season with a benefit performance of Langston Hughes’ acclaimed gospel song play, “Black Nativity,” on Sunday, December 4 at the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre in downtown San Francisco. Participants will enjoy a post-performance reception to which IIE has invited members of the cast. “Black Nativity” is an African-American interpretation of the nativity story, written in 1961 by poet Langston Hughes. The first half of this “cantata with dance” recreates the journey of Mary and Joseph, resplendent in African costumes, to Bethlehem, accompanied by a rousing repertoire of old-fashioned spirituals. The second half skips ahead a few centuries to a 1940s-style southern-U.S. revival scene attended by entertaining stock characters: testifying deacons, swooning veiled ladies, and down-home preachers. The African-American viewpoint and the gospel music make “Black Nativity” a unique performance piece.
Bring the whole family and friends and participate in an amazing evening of exciting theatre, thrilling dance and glorious gospel music.
A wonderful way to celebrate the human spirit around the world.
Cost: $45.00 each
Children 12 and under: $20.00 each
To reserve a ticket for the performance, email wcoast@iie.org as soon as possible and send a check payable to IIE to: IIE, 530 Bush Street, Suite 1000, San Francisco, CA 94108. Not refundable.
Historical notes: Langston Hughes, an African American, was one of the most prominent American writers and cultural icons of the 20th century. Black Nativity, written in 1961, is based on a religious theme, the birth story of Jesus, but the importance of the play is as an expression of African-American culture through gospel music. African Americans were brought here as slaves and upon arrival were forbidden practice of their languages, customs, and religions (African animist or Islam). While the slaves' original religion was forcibly suppressed, the one religious expression made available was the owner's approved version of mostly Protestant Christianity (there were also some Catholic and Jewish slave owners). While this form of Christianity may have been viewed as a way to control the slaves, it was their only allowed social outlet and became a source of solace and comfort during those dark years. Part of the religious service included the singing of hymns, and the slaves brought some of their African inflections to the singing of these songs, including “call and response,” syncopation and “blue” notes. These influences, when mixed with European musical influences and instruments, resulted in the Blues, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and eventually Rock and Roll. Another result was “Gospel” music-vocal music, choral “block” chord singing by groups of 3-6 people. In the early 1930s an American of African descent by the name of Thomas Dorsey put it all together and became known as the Father of Gospel Music. His best known and most loved composition was “Peace in the Valley.” In the 1940s gospel groups featured quartets. This music was considered too raw, raucous, unrefined, loud, jazzy and irreverent for the main Christian churches and was utilized mostly in Pentecostal, Holiness and various evangelical churches. In the 1960s Black churches and gospel reached their high point of societal influence in the Civil Rights movement, as the gospel song “We Shall Overcome” became the anthem of the movement.

The Institute of International Education (IIE), founded in 1919, is the world’s leader in the exchange of people and ideas. IIE manages more than 250 international educational programs for over 18,000 people annually, including the prestigious Fulbright Program, which IIE has administered on behalf of the Department of State since it was established in 1947.
The IIE Distinguished Service Award, considered to be one of the most prestigious in the Bay Area, is given annually to outstanding individuals in recognition of their contributions to the fields of public service, education, business or diplomacy. This year’s Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Franklin “Pitch” Johnson, well-known venture capitalist and generous Bay Area philanthropist.
We are proud to recognize the extraordinary impact that Pitch has had in the Bay Area community and beyond. He knows first hand the importance of international education and the opportunities it affords. Pitch has been a generous supporter of IIE for many years because he recognizes that education and professional training enable students from around the world to expand and achieve their dreams.
Pitch was one of the first generation of venture capitalists. His business acumen, courage and foresight helped push California to the forefront in the fields of technology and biotechnology. In 1962 he co-founded Draper and Johnson Investment Company and later became an independent venture capitalist when he established Asset Management Company in 1965.
Of those to whom much is given, much is expected. Pitch has returned much to the Bay Area and the global community both financially and with a personal time commitment. He has been active in alumni affairs both at Stanford and Harvard Business School. He created and taught the first course in venture capital at Stanford and served for 12 years as an elected trustee of the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District. Pitch is an outspoken advocate for stem-cell research and supported the successful state proposition. He has been a long-time director of the San Francisco Opera and has served as chairman of the board for the last six years. He is also chairman of the Franklin and Catherine Johnson Foundation, which is active in mid-peninsula youth-related work.
